what’s ubix?
the ubietous information experiences research group focuses on data visualization and new approaches to communicating and collaborating around data.
the group is led by matt brehmer, an HCI researcher and assistant professor at the University of Waterloo's School of Computer Science… see this page for list of members, while this page lists our publications.
what’s ubiety?
M-W defines ubiety as the quality or state of being in a place. To paraphrase HCI luminary Bill Buxton, if ubiquitous computing is defined as computation in all places at all times, ubietous computing is the right computation in the right place at the right time. The ubix group is interested in ubietous representations of information: those which manifest at the right place and time, in the right modalities and form factors for the activities at hand.

if you are an undergraduate student, there are several ways to work with the group… if you are currently a University of Waterloo Computer Science undergraduate student, there are part-time paid opportunities to work with me through the Undergraduate Research Assistant (URA) program… you can also do complete an (unpaid) CS 499T honours thesis project under matt’s supervision… if you are a University of Waterloo undergraduate student in the Math Faculty, the Mathematics Undergraduate Research Awards (MURA) program supports full-time research projects… finally, if you are an undergraduate student at any postsecondary institution in Canada, there are full-time paid opportunities to work with me via the Undergraduate Research Fellowship (URF) and the NSERC USRA program.
land acknowledgment
the group works on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. We acknowledge the enduring presence and deep traditional knowledge and philosophies of the Indigenous people with whom we share this land.
